Job Description

Missions

Context :
Mast seeding is a well-known example of pulsed resources in terrestrial ecosystems, characterized by intermittent fruit production (e.g., acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts) that is generally synchronized across a whole forest. These seeds constitute an important food resource for many animal species and influence population dynamics (Bogdziewicz et al. 2016). Wild boars feed on mast seeding. This species is widespread throughout Europe (Massei et al., 2015) and has significant implications for hunting, agriculture, road safety, and public health. It is therefore important to determine how intermittent food resources can influence the population dynamics of this species.

Activity

In this project, the postdoctoral fellow will determine the role of different types of forest fruits—both qualitatively (fruit type: e.g., acorns, beechnuts, or chestnuts) and quantitatively—on various reproductive parameters of female wild boars. To do so, the postdoctoral fellow will benefit from data of the “Observatoire reproduction du sanglier et fructifications forestières” managed by the French Office for Biodiversity. Thanks to numerous partners, data on forest fruits (acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts) and on wild boar reproduction (analysis of the reproductive tracts and description of embryos) have been collected for at least five years at some 30 sites across France, each representing contrasting ecological contexts.

Your Profil

Skills

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with the following profile:
- Strong interest in statistical modeling;
- Ability to work with large databases;
- Ph.D. in quantitative ecology with strong expertise in modeling, population dynamics, and demography;
- Experience with the R software;
- Ability to work in a team, both in person and remotely;
- Strong writing skills.

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will be supervised by Marlène Gamelon (CNRS) in the “Evolutionary Biodemography” team at the Laboratory of Biometry and Evolutionary Biology in Villeurbanne (https://lbbe.univ-lyon1.fr). The LBBE has a staff of approximately 200; the research conducted there is based on three pillars: (i) biometrics, with methodological developments in statistics, computer science, and mathematics for modeling living organisms; (ii) ecology and evolution, ranging from the molecular and genomic levels to the population and community levels; (iii) health, through the development of precision medicine and evidence-based medicine.
This project will imply close collaborations with Éric Baubet and Eveline Nivois from the French Office for Biodiversity.
