Missions

The Biodiversity and Marine Evolution team at the Montpellier Institute of Evolutionary Sciences is looking for a candidate for a post-doctorate as part of the European Biocean5D program. The post-doctorate is based on analyses of marine communities, characterized by metabarcoding, along port impact gradients, with a focus on non-native species and the ultimate aim of characterizing new indicators of marine ecosystem health.

Activités

Bioinformatic and biostatistical analyses of high-throughput sequencing data obtained from samples collected in European ports during the Tara-Europa expedition. In addition to standard metabarcoding analyses to describe species assemblages, the data will be exploited for population analyses at intra-OTU level. Candidates will be expected to present their results to consortium partners and to promote them through publications.

Compétences

To fulfil the proposed mission, the person recruited must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a PhD in molecular ecology with a strong marine component and the use of (bio)computational tools.
-Demonstrate research experience in biological invasion processes and/or the use of eDNA to identify non-indigenous species, if possible in the marine environment.
- Demonstrate excellent skills and experience in biostatistics applied to the analysis of species and community diversity in R
- Proficiency in bioinformatics and statistical tools for metabarcoding data analysis (e.g. DADA2, SWARM, etc.) and proficiency in the Bash and Python programming languages
- Excellent writing skills in English, as demonstrated by scientific publications
- A proven track record of integrating into a collaborative working context involving multiple partners.
- Excellent level of English (C1, C2) to adapt to the European nature of the co-supervisors and the BioCean5D consortium. Language skills in French and Catalan are not required, although they would be appreciated for interaction with the French and Spanish teams collaborating on the post-doctoral project.

Contexte de travail

The Institute of Evolutionary Sciences of Montpellier (ISEM, https://isem-evolution.fr/en/) is located on the campus of the University of Montpellier, close to Montpellier city center. This internationally renowned institute has been developing research on the origin and dynamics of biodiversity for more than 40 years. A particular feature of the proposed position is that, in addition to this institute, the person recruited will be in close interaction with two other research institutes/laboratories, where the two co-supervisors of this post-doctoral project are based: 1) Ifremer, within the MARBEC laboratory and 2) CSIC, within the CEAB laboratory in Blanes. Travel/missions between Montpellier and Blanes are to be expected during the duration of the contract, as well as regular videoconference exchanges.

Contraintes et risques

No particular risks other than those associated with sedentary work (computer analysis position). No major constraints other than those related to collaboration with two other laboratories, one in Sète (France) and the other in Blanes (Spain), with assignments/travel for meetings with colleagues.
