Job Description

Missions

Background
This postdoctoral position is part of the project “Climate change and air pollution in an urbanized area: health and socio-economic impact of mitigation scenarios” (ClimAir, funded by the ANR – 2022–2026; https://anr.fr/Project-ANR-21-CE03-0006). The objective of ClimAir is to evaluate, through an interdisciplinary approach, scenarios for mitigating GHG emissions and air pollution (by 2050), as well as scenarios for adapting to climate change, based on their impact on air quality, human health, and socio-spatial inequalities. The successful candidate will be fully integrated into the project team, which brings together atmospheric physicists, climatologists, epidemiologists, economists, and urban planners.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the postdoctoral position is to study how the impacts of climate change (temperature and heat waves, floods and high water, clay shrinkage and swelling), adaptation capacities (proximity to cooling islands such as parks or waterways), and exposure to air pollution can influence residential location choices.
This work is part of WP5 of the project, which focuses on the socio-economic challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation scenarios. This WP specifically addresses socio-spatial inequalities. Residential location issues will therefore also be analyzed through the lens of these social inequalities.

Activity

To achieve the research objective, we will analyze—using residential choice models (discrete choice)—the impact of climate change and exposure to pollution on residential location choices at the national level, drawing on data from a 2023 survey of 1,300 people.
To do this, it will be necessary to collect data on exposure to the impacts of climate change, adaptive capacity, and exposure to air pollution.

Your Profil

Skills

Ph.D. in Economics
The skills required for this project are as follows:
* Proficiency in statistical tools (at least one of the following software programs or languages: Stata, R, Python)
* Strong background in applied econometrics (related to topics such as the environment, individual choice, residential location, etc.),
* Knowledge of GIS tools would be appreciated,
* Fluency in English required,
* Ability to work independently and take initiative within a team setting,
* Strong writing skills.

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will be based in Grenoble at the GAEL laboratory (Laboratoire d'Economie Appliquée de Grenoble), a joint research unit involving the CNRS, INRAE, the University of Grenoble Alpes, and Grenoble INP, with a staff of approximately 70. GAEL's research focuses primarily on issues related to sustainable innovation and consumption, particularly in the energy and agro-industrial sectors. Research is organized into three areas: Consumption, Energy/Environment, and Innovation.
The candidate will join the Energy/Environment research area. Research conducted within GAEL's Energy/Environment department aims to understand and evaluate the impact of policies in the fields of energy and climate. The team conducts high-level research in applied and academic economics and enjoys significant visibility at the national, European, and international levels.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Sandrine Mathy, CNRS Senior Researcher at GAEL, and Hélène Bouscasse, INRAE Research Fellow at CESAER.
