Missions

We are looking for an enthusiastic data analyst with strong programming and database management skills. The position is based at the Biodiversity and Environment Research Center in Toulouse.
The collborator will contribute to the management and analysis of tropical forest tree inventory data (tree census), airborne lidar surveys (point clouds, canopy height models, digital terrain models) and/or terrestrial lidar scan data (point clouds, quantitative structure models). The data mainly used will be airborne lidar data.
The results of these analyses will be made available online via a dedicated web interface (API) and the code will be posted on git.
These databases will enable the validation of global forest carbon estimates using satellite measurements.
This position will be part of the European Space Agency's FRM4BIOMASS project, funded under the global GEO-TREES initiative (https://geo-trees.org/).

Activities

Analysis of data from forest inventories, airborne lidar surveys, and terrestrial lidar surveys: data quality control, data analysis, traceability assurance. Development of analysis tools (R, Python, C/C++) and versioning (Git).

Skills

Confirmed programming skills (R, Python, C/C++, Git) Master's degree in data science, programming. English language skills, both spoken and written.
Ability to work in a team.
Ability to present results and progress to local and international technical teams.
Enthusiasm for science, knowledge and interest in forest ecology, biodiversity, and the carbon cycle.

Work Context

The project will be carried out at the CRBE (Center for Research on Biodiversity and the Environment) research unit in Toulouse, France, within Dr. Jérôme Chave's group. It will rely heavily on existing international collaborations within the GEO-TREES Global Initiative. The contract is for 12 months, renewable.
