Job Description

Missions

As part of the RADICAL project within the French PEPR Batteries programme, the postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development of new aqueous redox flow batteries using organic molecules as redox-active compounds. The researcher will participate in the development of protocols for evaluating new electrolytes and their implementation in battery testing. A significant part of the work will focus on investigating the stability of these electrolytes and their degradation mechanisms.

The overall objective of the project is to develop a cost-effective and sustainable battery using water as the solvent and operating at near-neutral pH. Our approach relies on the use of readily available, low-cost organic molecules that comply with the principles of environmentally responsible chemistry as active compounds for energy storage.

Activity

The postdoctoral researcher will have the following main responsibilities:

* Characterize the molecules provided by the other project partners and evaluate their electrochemical properties.
* Evaluate the most promising molecules in redox flow battery cells.
* Investigate degradation mechanisms and design and implement the experiments required for these studies.
* Develop experimental protocols for the simultaneous monitoring of electrolyte composition, pH, and dissolved oxygen.
* Establish correlations between electrolyte degradation mechanisms, physicochemical parameters (pH, concentration, temperature), and battery cycling conditions.
* Analyze the results and report them through regular progress reports.
* Communicate with the other consortium members and participate in project meetings.
* Prepare scientific publications and present the results at international conferences.

Your Profil

Skills

### Knowledge

* Strong knowledge of electrochemistry.
* Experience in electrochemical energy storage would be an asset.
* Knowledge of electrolyte physical chemistry.
* Basic knowledge of organic chemistry and related characterization techniques (NMR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, etc.).
* Good command of scientific English.

### Technical and Professional Skills

* Strong interest in experimental work and in designing and implementing experimental setups.
* Experimental data analysis and processing.
* Scientific writing and communication skills.

### Personal Skills

* Ability to work independently.
* Scientific rigor.
* Initiative and proactivity.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and in a multidisciplinary environment.

Your Work Environment

The position is based at the Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier (ICGM), within the Department of Materials Chemistry, Nanostructures and Materials for Energy. ICGM is a joint research institute of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier, internationally recognized for its expertise in electrochemistry for energy storage and conversion.

The postdoctoral researcher will be recruited as part of the RADICAL project within the French PEPR Batteries programme. The project started in November 2023 and will run until the end of October 2028. The proposed position and associated research activities will therefore contribute to the final phase of the project.

The project brings together four main partners, as well as two additional associated partners: ICGM (Montpellier), ICR (Marseille), PHENIX (Sorbonne University, Paris), and LCPME (Nancy). Several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers have been, or are currently, involved in the project.

At ICGM, a PhD project funded through RADICAL is currently underway and will be completed in autumn 2027. An overlap of several months between the PhD student and the postdoctoral researcher is planned to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and experimental protocols.

Constraints and risks

Use of chemicals and electrically powered equipment, in strict compliance with applicable safety regulations. Travel within France and abroad will be required.

Compensation and benefits

Compensation
