Job Description

Missions

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) promises tremendous scientific opportunity as a new kind of space-based observatory exposing an unprecedented view of the universe in the millihertz gravitational wave band. LISA will provide the opportunity for profound, potentially revolutionary, unexpected discoveries, either on its own or when combined with other astronomical data. Fully exploiting LISA in this way will require further exploration peering deeply into LISA's data, and may involve the broader science community. Making unexpected discoveries with LISA data is a special challenge which inevitably involves statistically weighing the possibility of unexpected instrumental behavior against unusual astrophysical hypotheses.

Working under the guidance of John Baker in collaboration with others members of the L2IT gravitational wave group and other partners, the recruited person will explore advances in LISA science and data analysis to prepare for making scientifically compelling discoveries with LISA. Some examples could involve analysis of new frontiers in source scenarios or source physics, modeling or processing of instrumental effects and/or exploration of new combined analyses with additional astronomical data. This or similar studies will provide pathways to better understand what LISA is really capable of and what it will take to realize those capabilities.

The following documents must be submitted to the CNRS Job Portal:

- CV
- Research Statement
- Cover letter.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide at least 2 letters of recommendation by email.

Activity

- Develop and complete innovative investigations of LISA's science applications and statistically rigorous data analysis methods toward achieving them.

- Combine both independent and collaborative work to optimize scientific impact.

- Report on progress in journals and conferences, participate in collaboration meetings, and present technical developments when appropriate;

- Contribute to the success of the lab and the broader scientific LISA science community, working effectively in diverse international and interdisciplinary teams and contributing to mentoring more junior researchers.

Your Profil

Skills

We are looking for a person with a PhD in a field related to the LISA mission (or who is expected to obtain one by the date of appointment) and with relevant experience and a collaborative approach.

The work requires expertise in LISA-related science and/or LISA data analysis or similar expertise in a related context. Experience in science leadership and/or science community contributions are assets. English language skills (speaking and writing) and the ability to work both in a diverse team and independently are necessary for this position.

Your Work Environment

The Laboratoire des 2 Infinis - Toulouse (L2IT) is a young and dynamic laboratory created in 2020 to conduct fundamental research with new numerical and theoretical approaches for data analysis. The laboratory's research is concentrated on particle physics, gravitational waves, and the equation of state of nuclear matter, and relies on a complementary development of analysis methodologies and data science led by the "Calculation, Algorithms, and Data" (CAD) team.

The "Gravitational Waves" (GW) team of L2IT conducts research on theoretical and experimental aspects of gravitational wave science, with a particular focus on the exploitation of new approaches linking theory to observations through data analysis and numerical simulations. The "GW" team is part of the LISA consortium, the Virgo collaboration, and the Einstein Telescope Consortium. In the context of LISA, the L2IT has roles contributing to the project's Distributed Data Processing Center (DDPC) including in the development of global fit data processing and in processing external data from other observatories.

The lab is located at the University of Toulouse (Toulouse Rangueil Campus) as a part of a larger vibrant local research environment with numerous and diverse science research centers. The LISA team at the L2IT collaborates extensively with nearby teams at the Centre National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (IRAP) and works in partnership with teams around France, across Europe and around the world.

The CNRS promotes the diversity without distinction of gender, disability or social, ethnic or geographical origins, and wishes to offer the possibility of joining an institution of research excellence to the greatest number. The L2IT and the gravitational wave team embrace this perspective and invite all relevant applicants.
