Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will develop a novel active remote sensing method for the detection and characterization of stratospheric aerosols by adapting the AEROTYPro/GRASP methodology to observations from the EarthCARE satellite mission.
The project builds upon the recent developments of AEROTYPro/GRASP (Qayyum et al., 2026) for aerosol vertical typing and AEROCHEMPro/GRASP (Merdji et al., 2026) for the retrieval of aerosol chemical composition profiles. These methodologies will be extended to monitor stratospheric sulfate aerosols within the framework of the ESA STATISTICS and STATISTICS-II projects.
Activity
The successful candidate will :
• Adapt the AEROTYPro/GRASP methodology for the typing and quantification of stratospheric sulfate aerosols;
• Develop optical models for the characterization of sulfate particles produced following anthropogenic SO₂ injection into the stratosphere;
• Exploit the synergy between the ATLID spaceborne lidar and the BBR (BroadBand Radiometer) onboard EarthCARE to improve aerosol identification and radiative impact assessment;
• Validate the methodology using numerical simulations and satellite observations;
• Apply the new retrieval method to investigate the geophysical and climatic impacts of sulfate aerosols injected into the stratosphere;
• Contribute to ESA technical deliverables and scientific publications.
Your Profil
Skills
• A PhD in atmospheric remote sensing, atmospheric physics, or a closely related field;
• Experience in atmospheric remote sensing, lidar observations, aerosol physics, and radiative transfer;
• Strong scientific programming skills (Python, Fortran, …);
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work in an international research environment and publish scientific results in English;
• Experience in retrieving aerosol properties from satellite observations using advanced inversion algorithms (such as the GRASP retrieval framework: https://www.grasp-earth.com/).
Your Work Environment
The postdoctoral researcher will be hosted at the Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systèmes Atmosphériques (LISA, UMR CNRS 7583), a joint research unit jointly operated by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), and Université Paris Cité (UPC). LISA is located on the UPEC campus in Créteil, in the Greater Paris area, France.
LISA comprises approximately 50 researchers and faculty members, 50 research engineers, technicians and administrative staff, as well as a large community of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and other research associates. The laboratory conducts internationally recognized research in atmospheric chemistry, air quality, climate, and atmospheric remote sensing.
The successful candidate will join the Large-Scale Pollution research team within the Spectroscopy and Atmospheres group and will work in close collaboration with the scientific partners of the projects, including GRASP SAS and the Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique (LOA).
The postdoctoral researcher will be jointly supervised by Dr. Juan Cuesta (CNRS, LISA) and Dr. Pasquale Sellitto (CNRS, LISA), working within the international consortium of the ESA STATISTICS and STATISTICS-II projects..
The successful candidate will be based at the Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systèmes Atmosphériques (LISA, CNRS / Université Paris-Est Créteil / Université Paris Cité) and will work in close collaboration with GRASP SAS and the Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique (LOA).
