Missions

The general mission is to explore Antarctic projections using a coupled atmosphere-ice-sheet and/or ocean-ice-sheet model using neural networks at the interface between the components. The successful candidate will contribute to the ANR-AIAI project (https://anr-aiai.github.io).

Activités

• Implement and refine the coupling between the neural network emulators currently developed within AIAI and an ice-sheet model (ElmerIce or GRISLI)
• Evaluate simulations conducted with this coupled models for the recent past
• Run simulations to explore the future evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet, its interactions with climate and the associated uncertainty.
• Present results in international conferences.
• Participate in the AIAI project and IPSL activities (meetings, seminars, etc.).
• Regularly follow the publications on the subject and write scientific articles.

Compétences

- Proven experience in meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, climate dynamics, or similar.
- Proven experience in using numerical tools to model the ocean, atmosphere and/or ice sheets
- Proven experience of coding in Python
- General knowledge of deep learning methods
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
- Proven experience in writing scientific articles.
- Organizational skills
- Teamplayer
The selection committee will take into account the gender balance of the research team.

Contexte de travail

Antarctica's contribution to sea-level rise has been reassessed since the first IPCC reports, using satellite observations and improved models. Nevertheless, this contribution remains highly uncertain, due to opposing effects: increased snow accumulation and ocean-induced melting. The lack of coupling between ice-sheet, ocean and atmosphere models increases this uncertainty, although coupled models are under development. As part of the AIAI project, we are developing emulators, based on artificial intelligence, that enable coupling between components at a lower cost than before. These can then be used to explore sets of projections that take into account atmosphere-ice-sheet and/or ocean-ice-sheet interactions.

This position is funded by the CNRS as part of the AIAI project, funded by ANR (https://anr-aiai.github.io). The candidate will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with the other project partners, located at the Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement (IGE) in Grenoble, the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) in Gif-sur-Yvette and the Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat (LOCEAN) in Paris, and to attend general assemblies and specific project meetings.
The work will be carried out at the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL), in cooperation with the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) in Gif-sur-Yvette and the Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat (LOCEAN) in Paris. The main office of the postdoctoral researcher will be one of the two, with regular visit to the other. This is to be discussed in the beginning with the supervision team (Julie Deshayes, Clara Burgard, Cécile Agosta). IPSL is a university research institute with nine laboratories and around 1,400 members, including researchers, engineers and students in equal numbers. Its main facilities are located on the Pierre et Marie Curie (Jussieu) campus of Sorbonne Université in Paris and on the campus of the Université de Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, in Guyancourt, in the Yvelines département. It reports to CNRS-INSU, UVSQ - Université Paris-Saclay, Sorbonne Université, CNES, CEA, IRD, ENS, École polytechnique, Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, Institut polytechnique de Paris, Université de Paris and Université Paris-Est-Créteil-Val-de-Marne.
