Missions

are looking for a creative postdoctoral researcher to join the BIOGEO-CNRS team, which is developing methods for evaluating global models for simulating soil carbon changes in earth system models, in particular the IPSL model IPSL-CM6. For over twenty years, the response of soil carbon to global warming has been one of the greatest uncertainties in projecting the global carbon cycle and future climate. Our group has developed the microbial trait data analysis and methodology needed to evaluate spatialized simulations of soil carbon, based on datasets of soil microbial growth rates and their efficiency in transforming organic matter (CUE, Carbon Use Efficiency). We can successfully use large datasets and statistical methods to constrain model simulations and improve their parameterization [1-3]. We intend to pursue these developments in order to understand the behavior of a variety of earth system models, within the framework of international collaborations and the OptimESM project. We also encourage the exploration of new model evaluation techniques. The 6-month contract is extendable to other projects.

Activités

The main activities will be as follows:
- Carry out stress simulations of soil carbon models using in situ data
- Understand the processes controlling soil organic matter decomposition in the models
- Use simulation results from the IPSL CM6 model

Compétences

We are looking for a candidate motivated by the development of in situ experiments on nanostructures. Previous experience of electron holography is not necessary, but candidates should be familiar with quantitative electron microscopy and/or in situ techniques and be willing to learn. Knowledge of the physics of magnetism and/or ferroelectric materials and/or microelectronic devices is a definite asset. The successful candidate should demonstrate good team spirit, a rigorous work ethic and a good command of written and spoken English.

Contexte de travail

CNRS is an internationally recognized laboratory for studies on the modeling of major biogeochemical cycles and climate around IPSL, as well as for methodological developments in soil carbon simulation. The laboratory has numerous international collaborations and is a member of the IPSL modeling cluster. Work will be carried out at LSCE as part of the OptimESM project, using the latest simulations of the IPSL earth system model and new-generation soil carbon models developed at LSCE in collaboration with project partners.
