Job Description

Missions

This internship is part of the "Remed-Chlor" project—funded by the ANR (French National Research Agency) and coordinated by Sarra Gaspard—which launched in 2022 and focuses on the multidisciplinary study of soil decontamination in Guadeloupe. Like Martinique, the island is currently heavily contaminated by an organic compound known as chlordecone; this substance was used as a pesticide to serve the interests of those leading the French West Indies' capitalist, high-output banana industry.
One aspect of the project's humanities and social sciences component—in which Malcom Ferdinand (a political scientist and philosopher at IRISSO, a joint CNRS-INRA research unit at Paris Dauphine University) is involved—focuses on studying the various ways the decontamination process for this type of toxic substance is perceived and represented.

Intern's Role:

The intern will participate in a preliminary study regarding perceptions of decontamination efforts in Guadeloupe in the context of chlordecone contamination. This study will involve conducting interviews with a range of local stakeholders, to be identified jointly with the supervisor. The intern will attend weekly meetings (remotely) with the Paris-based research team, as well as selected Remed-Chlor project meetings. Finally, the intern will participate in the team's collaborative analysis of public policies concerning pesticides, working alongside members who are studying other regions of the world. Under Malcom Ferdinand's supervision, the intern will receive training in literature review and preliminary research methods. At the end of the three-month period, the intern will present the findings of their literature review and preliminary study to the entire team, both in writing and orally.
