Thesis Subject
Evolving functional RNA motifs for biotechnology.
The PhD candidate will develop functional RNA elements for biotechnology purposes. Examples include light up aptamer, biosensors and or RNA elements that enable translation in the context of mRNA vaccines. The project combines quantitative RNA structure-function analysis, RNA-array assays, functional screening of very large variant libraries using droplet microfluidics, high-throughput sequencing, and cell-based validation. The results will contribute to the design of more robust and controllable elements that will be useful for RNA therapeutics.
Your Work Environment
The project will be carried out at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), within CNRS unit UPR9002 Architecture and Reactivity of RNA. The PhD candidate will receive joint supervision from Redmond Smyth, CNRS Research Director and Michael Ryckelynck, Professor, University of Strasbourg. This doctoral project will be affiliated with the Doctoral School of Life and Health Sciences of Strasbourg (ED-414), which has validated it. This research project is funded by the region Alsace and the NetRNA research cluster will begin in October 2026. To ensure an immediate start and efficient progress, the candidate must have in-depth knowledge of molecular biology and nucleic acid biochemistry, as well as prior experience in handling nucleic acids, particularly in in vitro selection and high-throughput sequencing. Additionally, the candidate should have basic knowledge of droplet microfluidics systems. The student will have access to microfluidics, sequencing and microscopy platforms, and doctoral training through ED414, IMCBio+, and the NetRNA research cluster. Participation in publications, conferences, innovation activities and, where appropriate, patenting is expected. Moreover, the laboratory is located in close proximity to public transportation (including the tram) as well as university eating facilities. Additionally, no specific time constraints (such as staggered hours or other obligations) will be required for carrying out the tasks.
Constraints and risks
Experimental work in molecular and cellular biology, including RNA handling, cell culture, chemical reagents and non-pathogenic biological samples. The position involves laboratory equipment, including microfluidics and sequencing instruments, following appropriate training in procedures and health and safety rules. No specific risks beyond those normally associated with a molecular biology laboratory are anticipated.
