Job Description
Thesis Subject
Reinforcement learning has become a central tool for artificial
locomotion, but it is still mostly used to control robots whose morphology
has already been fixed. This PhD will investigate how learned locomotion
policies can instead become part of the design process itself. The
scientific objective is to develop RL methods that evaluate, compare, and
ultimately guide the choice of robot morphologies for dynamic quadruped
locomotion. The work will address the key challenge of learning policies
that remain meaningful across changing bodies, actuation properties, and
contact dynamics. These methods will provide the algorithmic basis for
co-designing quadrupeds whose mechanics and control are optimized
together rather than sequentially.
Your Work Environment
The work will be carried out within the Gepetto team at LAAS-CNRS, whose research focuses on motion planning, trajectory generation, and control for legged robots, with particular expertise in humanoid and quadrupedal locomotion. The research is part of the ANR QuadrupedATIM project, which aims to develop novel locomotion and control methods for an experimental quadruped robot, building on the robotic platforms and software infrastructure developed within the team. The PhD will be supervised by Nicolas Mansard and Thomas Flayols, researchers in the Gepetto team, in an internationally recognized research environment dedicated to legged robotics and motion generation.
