Description of the thesis topic
-The project is funded by the EEC project (Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN) focused on engineering protein-carbohydrate interactions for diagnostics and cell targeting (https://synbiocarb.science).
The research, which will be carried out at CERMAV-CNRS, Grenoble, France, relies on the use of glycosyltransferases (GTs) to expand the tool box of synthetic glycobiology methods. GTs are the key enzymes that synthesize the complex glycans that are found on glycoconjugates (i.e. glycolipids and glycoproteins). Therefore, they present a great interest in the context of the SynBioCarb project for building a sophisticated glycolandscape on the surface of artificial cells or tissues with applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery and diagnostics. This opens the possibility to add one or several sugars at specific position(s) of a glycan or to introduce unnatural sugars that could serve for biorthogonal chemistry. A small set of GTs, with specificities related to glycans selected by the consortium, will be produced in recombinant forms and functionally characterized and/or engineered to be adapted to the needs of the project.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in biochemistry and protein engineering. He or she will participate in the network's training activities and work placements at the laboratories of the participating academic and industrial teams. Regular meetings and workshops within the EU-funded synBIOcarb International Training Network will supplement the training and support provided at CERMAV-CNRS.

Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Have a Diploma and/or a Master Degree in Biochemistry or Structural Biology.
• Have less than 4 years research experience at the signature of the contract (measured from the time the Master's degree has been obtained).
• Not have a PhD already.
• Not have resided or carried out main activity in France for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to the reference recruitment date.

The Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches sur les Macromolécules Végétales (Cermav, UPR 5301) is a basic research laboratory on glycoscience. The multidisciplinary approach, covering the specialties of chemistry, physicochemistry and biology, allows it to occupy today an important place, at the international level, in the key research areas of carbohydrates (sugars, oligo- and polysaccharides, glycopolymers and glycomaterials) , their synthesis, characterization, functions and applications in various fields of human health, new energies and materials of the future.
The team "Structural and Molecular Glycobiology", in which the project will be conducted, studies lectins and glycosyltransferases. The team includes about 15 people working on protein production and the biochemical and biophysical characterization of their interaction with carbohydrates
The salary indicated on the form is 1768.55 € (french basis) but since this is part of the H2020 program, the real salary will be 2814 € (corresponding to 2262 € after social security).
synBIOcarb is a major EU funded programme which brings together 14 leading European partners in a transnational network, implementing a multidisciplinary and intersectorial research and training programme between the academic and the industrial partners in the fields of synthetic glycobiology. synBIOcarb will provide a new generation of scientists with advanced scientific training in chemical synthesis, protein engineering, biophysics, cell biology and analytical device technologies that underpin the development and exploitation of glycoscience for diagnostics and targeted drug delivery
