Job Description
Thesis Subject
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to study the mechanisms, dynamics and effects of neuromodulation in the olfactory cortex, focusing on cholinergic and GABAergic inputs from the basal forebrain. The project will primarily use fiber photometry recordings and optogenetic stimulations (Y. Sych, et al., Nature Methods 16, 553 (2019)) in mice performing an olfactory behavioral task.
The project is co-supervised by two scientists with complementary expertise, Y. Sych and D. Desaintjan. The candidate will be surrounded by researchers with diverse skills ranging from cellular and molecular neurobiology to neural network physiology and computational neuroscience. The position is fully funded for 36 months through a grant awarded in 2025 by the ANR, France's primary research funding agency.
Your Work Environment
The selected candidate will join the Institute of Cellular and Integrative Neuroscience Cellulaires et Intégratives (INCI), located on the Esplanade university campus—a green and lively environment in close proximity to Strasbourg's city center and easily accessible by public transport. She/he will conduct her research within the "Mesoscale Networks, Neuromodulation, and Behavior" team, in close collaboration with the "Physiology of Neural Networks" team. Our two teams, which share office and lab space on the same floor of the institute, comprise around twenty scientists, including six permanent faculty members and approximately fifteen PhD students and postdocs. A full-time research engineer is also dedicated to the project.
INCI hosts 9 research teams, for a total of about 130 employees, including about fifty permanent researchers. The CNRS is a world-renowned research institute recognized for its scientific excellence. Our institute provides a stimulating, friendly, and international work environment, with researchers from a wide range of nationalities.
Constraints and risks
The main constraints are related to animal experimentation (mice) and associated risks (bites, scratches, allergies, etc.). Working alone during certain experiments may also be a constraint.
