Job Description
Thesis Subject
The employee will work on the surface acoustic control of the erbium emission in silicon.
Recent results from a collaboration between the Institut Néel and the Technical University Munich have made it possible to identify and control implanted erbium dopants whose emission falls in the telecom C-band. This opens up many possibilities that we will exploit in the project. More specifically, we propose to control the erbium emission in SOI using acoustic waves, offering a new control knob of quantum memories transitions. This approach takes full advantage of the confinement due to the nanometric size of the Si layer and well-established techniques for depositing piezoelectric pads.
The project consists of two complementary parts. On the one hand, developing a low-temperature optical fluorescence spectroscopy experiment to isolate and characterise a small ensemble of implanted erbium. On the other hand, fabricate an active sample that includes piezoelectric microelements for surface acoustic wave excitation. The ultimate goal here is to observe the direct coupling to acoustic phonons on the erbium optical emission.
Compétences attendues : The candidate should have a background in light-matter interaction and optics. Internship experience in this field would be highly appreciated. An interest for manufacturing and materials science is also expected.
Your Work Environment
The work will be carried out at the Institut Néel in Grenoble and will be supervised by researchers from the NPSC team for the monitoring of the thesis project and training on the equipment. Occasional missions to collaborating partners of the project are also possible.
The Institut Néel is a reference laboratory in the field of condensed matter physics. It is part of CNRS Physique. All the skills and equipment required for the project are available in the laboratory or have already been provided within the collaborative framework of the project.
CNRS is a public, scientific and technological organisation.
The core mandate is to identify, carry out ou have carried out, either alone or with partners, all research that advances science or contributes to the country's economic, social, and cultural progress. Internationally recognised for the excellence of its scientific research, the CNRS is a reference in the world of research and development, as well as for the general public.
