Job Description

Thesis Subject

The candidate will be responsible for experimentally investigating flame dynamics in the BIMER HP test rig, with the goal of studying the rig's stability and analyzing flame stabilization as a function of pressure. To this end, he or she will implement high-speed diagnostics aimed at investigating the velocity field, the liquid fuel spray, the flame front position, and the acoustic behavior of the system, as well as the interaction between these quantities.

As the BIMER HP rig is new to the EM2C laboratory, it will need to be characterized (operating envelope) in order to study the dynamic phenomena occurring in it. The main objective will be to investigate changes in the rig's behavior relative to atmospheric pressure. It will also involve determining the ignition, power ramp-up, and steady-state operating procedures for the rig. The existence or absence of instabilities and bistable flame structures will need to be determined.

The analysis of the measurements will rely on advanced post-processing techniques such as dynamic mode decomposition, time-frequency representations for transient phenomena, or nonlinear time-series analyses. Low-order modeling of the system using tools such as Helmholtz solvers or acoustic network models may also be considered.

Your Work Environment

The EM2C laboratory (CNRS Ingénierie and Université Paris-Saclay/CentraleSupélec, http://em2c.centralesupelec.fr/), through its high-level academic research on energy and combustion and its applied studies conducted in partnership with leading companies and research centers in the fields of transportation and energy, contributes significantly to advancing knowledge on these critical challenges, both for the climate and the environment. To address these challenges, the laboratory's research activities are organized around three main themes entitled Combustion, Non-equilibrium Plasmas, and Transfer Physics, along with a cross-cutting activity in Applied Mathematics. You will be part of the Combustion group. As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the SMEMAG doctoral school (MECHANICAL AND ENERGY SCIENCES, MATERIALS AND GEOSCIENCES) of Université Paris-Saclay.

Constraints and risks

The position is in a sector subject to the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST) and therefore requires, in accordance with regulations, that your arrival be authorized by the competent authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).

As some activities are experimental in nature, specific training regarding associated risks will be provided.
