Job Description
Thesis Subject
The potential of extremophilic microbes for bioprospecting — the systematic search for natural products with industrial applications and their genetic origins — is broadly recognized. However, this potential remains largely untapped due to the challenges of cultivating these organisms in laboratory conditions and lack of genetic tools. In this project, we will combine high-throughput genetics and advanced materials science to efficiently screen for thermoresistance genes in the archaeon Thermococcus kodakarensis, which grows up to 100°C. A genome-wide transposon library of T. kodakarensis will be cultivated in millifluidic devices made from highly heat-resistant materials, allowing for the application of heat pulses exceeding 100°C within seconds. By combining microbiology with materials science and engineering we expect to propel advancements in biotechnology by uncovering genes involved in the immediate and adaptive responses to extreme heat. Beyond potential applications, this project offers new avenues for understanding the evolution, plasticity, and physical constraints that shape cellular life.
Your Work Environment
The PhD student will carry out the first part of their thesis at the Institut de Biologie Intégrative de la Cellule (I2BC) in Gif-sur-Yvette under the supervision of Tamara Basta. The second part of the thesis will take place under the supervision of Anaïs Cario at the Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux (ICMCB).
The Institut de Biologie Intégrative de la Cellule (I2BC) is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 9198) affiliated with the CEA, CNRS, and Université Paris-Saclay. The institute is dedicated to studying the functioning of cells as integrated systems at various scales, using a wide range of biological organisms and model systems. It brings together numerous research teams working on all aspects of the cell, from cellular components to cell interactions, and features advanced technological platforms (microscopy, spectroscopy, crystallography, genomic analysis, modeling, etc.) to support fundamental and applied research in integrative biology.
The Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux (ICMCB, UMR 5026) is a Joint Research Unit affiliated with the CNRS, the University of Bordeaux, and Bordeaux INP. The institute specializes in solid-state chemistry, materials science, and chemical processes, with recognized expertise in the design, synthesis, shaping, and recycling of new materials. Its activities span diverse application fields, including energy, environment, health, electronics, and photonics.
