Job Description
Thesis Subject
This thesis aims to understand how the brain controls our ability to move. It focuses particularly on reticulospinal neurons, which are essential for transmitting motor commands between the brainstem and the spinal cord. Their dysfunction leads to a loss of motor autonomy, especially after a spinal cord injury.
The goal is to map the connectivity (efferent and afferent), define the function, and identify new molecular markers for different types of reticulospinal neurons. This program will provide new insights into the specialization of RS neurons and the neuronal bases of the diversity and versatility of motor repertoires.
The expected results are highly relevant for research aiming to adapt regenerative or targeted stimulation strategies to specific types of RS neurons in post-traumatic contexts.
Your Work Environment
The thesis will be carried out at the Institut des Neurosciences Paris-Saclay, within an international research environment that brings together teams in developmental, cognitive, integrative, and computational neurosciences.
The recruited candidate will join the "Neuronal Circuits and Motor Control" team (https://neuropsi.cnrs.fr/equipe-julien-bouvier/), which includes a research director, a lecturer, two study engineers, two postdoctoral researchers, one PhD student, and several undergraduate and master's students.
The project will combine, in mouse models, viral tracing of connectivity, histology, genomic analyses, in vivo functional manipulations, and movement analysis.
The PhD student will receive close supervision, participate in the team's scientific meetings, institute seminars, and national and international collaborations. They will also have access to cutting-edge technological platforms for neuroscience research.
