Thesis Subject

Security of neural data-hiding methods: evaluation and enhancement

Your Work Environment

This thesis will, in its first phase, investigate the security of neural-network-based watermarking and/or steganography methods, before moving toward the development of more secure techniques. The initial stage of the research aims to formalize the specific attributes and metrics required to measure the security of an insertion scheme. Examples include:

Spectral peaks in the Fourier domain (artifacts often left by neural insertions designed for robustness against translation or rotation);
Multi-scale patterns (traces resulting from insertions targeting robustness against scale changes);
Significant distributional divergence between original and stego-content, or between the embedded signal and compression noise;
Undetectable adversarial attacks via adversarial networks;
The absence of a secret key, which renders the construction of the watermark signal static.
The PhD candidate will seek to transcribe these attributes into differentiable scoring functions wherever possible, paving the way for generic security evaluation metrics in the field of data-hiding. In the second phase, the researcher will propose insertion and decoding methods that incorporate these 'adversarial' cost functions to achieve higher levels of security. Furthermore, this work will explore the potential synergy between robustness-enhancing strategies (often achieved through data augmentation) and security-enhancing techniques, as these two constraints are frequently perceived as being in conflict.
