Description of the thesis topic

The subject of the thesis is cellular evolution in cancer. It is part of a CNRS 80 Prime project that brings together philosophers, biologists and hematologists. The project aims at questioning and renewing the model of clonal evolution. Cancers are composed of heterogeneous cells that make treatment difficult. The clonal evolution model aims to describe and explain the evolutionary dynamics within cancer cells in order to better predict the evolution of the disease and to identify therapeutic targets. This model is based on a central concept: the clone. This concept of clone is widely accepted and little debated. However, the grouping of cells into clones raises questions about both its definition and the nature of the clone. What mutations allow the identification of clones? What about other hereditary traits such as epigenetic modifications? The EvoC project proposes the first multidisciplinary analysis (conceptual, experimental, and medical) of the clone in cancerology. It will allow to establish a typology of the clone, to confront the role of different types of clones in cancer, and to propose a revision of the concept to make it more adequate to experimental and medical practice.

The candidate to the doctoral contract is invited to participate in this project either by proposing an analysis of the clone concept in oncology, or by proposing an analysis that would renew the conception of clonal evolution in cancer.

Work Context

The student will be inserted in the Institute of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (https://ihpst.pantheonsorbonne.fr/ihpst). The IHPST is a very large team of philosophy of science. There are 5 research axes. The student will be part of the axis of philosophy of biology and medicine (https://ihpst.pantheonsorbonne.fr/philosophie-biologie-et-medecine). This axis is directed by Philippe Huneman, it contains 6 researchers or teacher-researchers and many PhD students. The premises of the IHPST, located at 13 rue du Four, 75006, have offices accessible to students, as well as a library and numerous books on the philosophy of biology.

The PhD contract is part of an interdisciplinary project and the thesis will be co-supervised by Lucie Laplane and Leïla Perié. Leïla Perié is a CRCN at the CNRS, she leads a research team entitled "Quantitative approach in immuno-hematology" at Curie (https://curie.fr/equipe/perie). Lucie Laplane also works at the Gustave Roussy cancer center in the "Hematopoietic tissue aging" team and in association with the Gustave Roussy hematology department (which is associated with the project). The candidate will be asked to work in situ in the research teams at Curie and Gustave Roussy, to participate in the project and in meetings related to the project.
