The coastlines of northern South America, from the Guianas to northeastern Brazil, are currently undergoing disruptions and transformations linked to the reconfiguration or expansion of the primary energy production sector: the continued reliance on fossil fuels (development of offshore oil production in Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil), rapid growth in electricity generation from renewable sources, and the consequences of deploying heavy infrastructure deep into the continent's interior—such as dams on Amazonian rivers that affect sediment balances. These processes are causing environmental disturbances and profound socio-spatial reconfigurations in the affected regions.
The TEP--LINA project will seek to characterize the physical and environmental impacts and how they are perceived by local communities or societies, while simultaneously considering the various processes of reconfiguration and energy transition. The project will seek to identify current or likely medium-term environmental conflicts, link them to observable physical processes, and develop a typology of these relationships. It will break new ground by demonstrating the geographic scope of the ongoing transformations, taking into account the entire coastline of the Guianas and northern Brazil.

Your Work Environment

The doctoral student recruited for this project will play three roles within the project. First, he or she will be required to gather information on ongoing energy transitions and their socio-environmental impacts. Sources of information will include academic articles, scientific literature, reports produced by NGOs, and databases of news articles. This data will then need to be categorized by types of conflicts and types of impacts. Second, he or she will need to identify recurring mechanisms of environmental or social impacts in order to identify patterns and causal chains. The doctoral student's final role will be to assist in the implementation of the project, particularly the coordination of scientific events

- Degree in geography, geomorphology, or environmental studies
- Interest in multidisciplinary approaches
- Interest in the social and environmental context of the northern South American coastline
- Strong personal and professional organizational skills; ability to work independently
- Proficiency in brazilian Portuguese is highly recommended
