Description du sujet de thèse

The Laboratory of Dynamical Meteorology is opening a PhD position to study the mesoscale organisation of tropical convection. The main objectives of the thesis will be : 1) to elucidate the physical processes that control the convective organization through the analysis of observations (airborne and satellite) and numerical simulations and 2) to assess and compare the relative role of the different processes in the organisation through the use of a simple conceptual model of convective organization. Advances in understanding will then be used to explain the radiative impact of the mesoscale organisation of convection, the sensitivity of the organisation to global warming, and/or
- Get familiar with the scientific literature on the mesoscale organisation of convection
- Analyze in-situ and satellite observations, and numerical simulations
- Use and develop a simple conceptual model of convective organization
- Develop original approaches to connect observations, theory and numerical simulations
- Work as part of a team studying convective organization
- Master in atmospheric physics
- Analytical and synthesis skills
- Ability to write scripts (python or R)
- Good communication skills; fluent oral communication in English
- Writing of scientific articles (in English)
- Taste and ability to work as part of a team

Contexte de travail

The PhD work will take place for 3 years in the MAESTRO group of the EMC3 team of the Laboratory of Dynamical Meteorology, at Sorbonne University ('Pierre and Marie Curie campus) in Paris.
The PhD will be advised by Sandrine Bony (CNRS Senior Scientist) and will be funded by the MAESTRO ERC project.
We expect the PhD student to collaborate with the other group members and the international laboratories involved in the ORCESTRA field campaign that took place over the tropical ocean during the summer 2024.
