Job Description

Thesis Subject

Contributions to characterization and packaging at millimeter frequencies

Your Work Environment

The PEPR Packaging PACTERA project focuses specifically (packaging chair) on validating the packaging concepts and building blocks developed within the project. The aim is to develop packaging dedicated to individual component supply chains (Renatech) that still need to reach Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) before being used in demonstrators. IEMN has implemented all the high-frequency characterization tools necessary to evaluate the performance of the building blocks and associated subsystems for communications within the targeted frequency range.

Within the chair associated with PACTERA, we plan to:
- Characterize the substrates on which the devices will be fabricated (using TDS free-space techniques or VNA techniques on propagation structures (e.g., lines, which will be defined by our colleagues at the CEA)).
- Develop packaging in a guiding structure for millimeter-wave signal extraction, and/or on glass for photodiode-based components. This is necessary to consider functionalizing the devices (packaging the devices on glass), ultimately allowing their integration into configurable devices. For this work, the D-band is the target, and the signal transfer techniques will be carried out within the Renapack network. Furthermore, we aim to test the association of photodiodes with active structures using ultrashort "wedge bond" type bonding, which will also be individually evaluated and tested at the IEMN up to 300 GHz. The expertise will be developed within the Renapack network under the PEPR Initiative Packaging. in order to open it up to communities.
- To develop single-frequency characterization techniques for D-band (110-170 GHz) surfaces in order to extract performance indicators (bandwidth, radiation, angular behavior, etc.).

- To measure the radiation of the first prototypes (around 140 GHz) of reconfigurable EM surfaces developed at CEA-LETI, jointly designed by IETR, XLIM, and UGA.

- To develop their characterization in the D-band as well, based on D-band channels, using different modulation formats (from QPSK to QAM-128). The specific characteristics of D-band channels necessitate specific developments for narrow spectral bandwidths (2.16 GHz) compared to current standards.

- To perform system-level tests on these surfaces in D-band to validate the surfaces manufactured by the consortium, in two areas:

o Generic tests at the physical layer level, i.e., at the modulation level, using appropriate metrics: Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER), and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).

o Network-layer tests: in this case, IP (Internet Protocol) frames will be directly encoded in D-band and adjusted to test the device.
The PhD student will primarily participate in the packaging of the photodiodes in direct partnership with the PACTERA consortium, interconnection testing, component modeling, and the setup of measurement benches specific to the project (system characterization component).
