Job Description
Thesis Subject
This PhD project is part of the Industrial Chair ReMB'Eau, funded by the Métropole Européenne de Lille and the Excellence Initiative of the University of Lille. The recruited candidate will contribute to the characterization of water quality and to the assessment of the feasibility of reusing non-conventional water resources (NCWR) at the scale of the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL).
Experimental research activities will be conducted at LASIRE, within the PCE research group (Cité Scientifique Campus, Villeneuve d'Ascq). The work will involve characterizing non-conventional water using various analytical techniques—some requiring optimization and validation—investigating treatment processes for potential reuse, and assessing environmental impacts on receiving ecosystems after use.
Within LASIRE, the PhD candidate will also coordinate interactions between partner teams, assist in organizing progress meetings, and contribute to the co-supervision of interns involved in the ReMB'Eau Chair project. At the core of the project, the candidate will ensure the integration of chemical, toxicological, and regulatory approaches, in close collaboration with researchers from multiple disciplines, local authorities, and socio-economic stakeholders.
The candidate will collaborate with teams in environmental health (LGCgE), health sciences (IMPECS, INFINITE), social sciences (TVES), analytical sciences (INRAE Arras), and psychological and behavioral sciences (PSITEC). This work is part of a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative project.
The PhD candidate will also contribute to data analysis, scientific writing, and dissemination of results at national and international conferences. In addition, the candidate will be involved in organizing and leading science outreach activities (e.g., Xperium).
Activities
Organize and conduct field sampling campaigns.
Perform holistic characterization of raw non-conventional water to identify pollutants requiring treatment.
Conduct pilot-scale treatment experiments.
Experimentally evaluate the efficiency of treatment processes for non-conventional water.
Monitor quality and pollution parameters to assess treatment performance.
Analyze global parameters (TSS, VSS, N, P, COD, BOD₅, TOC, etc.).
Prepare samples (solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, acid digestion for metal analysis) and analyze extracts using techniques such as UV-Vis, HPLC-UV/Fluorescence, GC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS.
Contribute to the organization of the Chair's annual conference.
Actively participate in the scientific life of the research team.
Present results orally or via posters at national and international conferences.
Contribute to the dissemination of results through publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
Participate in the organization and facilitation of science outreach activities programmed in the ReMB'Eau Industrial Chair.
Required Skills
Master's degree in analytical chemistry, water chemistry, or environmental chemistry.
Strong expertise in analytical techniques for trace metals and organic micropollutants is recommended.
Knowledge of water treatment processes (physico-chemical treatment, biological treatment, advanced oxidation processes, nature-based solutions, etc.) would be an asset.
