Description of the thesis topic
Missions - To analyze the materials and the processes of fabrication of the "Saint-Porchaire" earthenware preserved in French and foreign museums. To adapt and apply non-destructive analysis protocoles, compare the performances of three analytic methods (PIGE/PIXE, LIBS and LA-ICP-MS) for the detection and quantitative analysis of low amounts of very light elements (Li, B) in lead glazes.
Activities - Three axes of research will be investigated.
1) A precise observation of the decoration and assembly techniques of the different parts of the artworks. This axis will require a very precise work in imaging and tomography for the selection of the corpus of the study and 3D photographing of details for purposes of comparison between the artworks;
2) The analysis of the materials will examine the ceramic substrate itself, which consists in a main white body with inlaid colored earths. This is the main part of the study. Both the ceramic bodies, the glazes and the interfaces will be analyzed, with the help of non-destructive methods like IBA, Raman, IRFT and XRD for global analyses, SEM-FEG and TEM for the microstructures. The peak temperature of the thermal treatments will be measured from XRD/Rietveld analysis, on the basis of an ongoing work on similar systems.
3) Methodology development: this PhD thesis work will be the opportunity to compare the performances of three elemental analysis methods: PIGE/PIXE, LIBS and LA-ICP-MS for the detection and quantification of very light elements in the lead glaze. Besides, OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) will be tested for a fully non-invasive analysis of the glaze surface (stratigraphy of thin glazes, engobe); possible alteration layers will also be reached for using this method.
Environment - The C2RMF is an institution under national jurisdiction working for the French museums. Part of the C2RMF is associated to the IRCP (CNRS UMR 8247) in the frame of the PCMTH team. Most of the analyses will take place in the two laboratories and will involve several teams. The PhD student will work in narrow collaboration with several museums in France (Louvre, Ecouen, ...) and in the United States (Frick Collection (NY), ...).
Skills - The candidate must have a good knowledge of ceramic materials and the main analytical technique implemented (XRD, SEM, Raman, ...). A previous experience in a multi-disciplinary team would be appreciated. A solid knowledge of English is mandatory.
Constraints and risks
Most of the work will take place in French laboratories, but insofar as part of the artworks and samples are owned and preserved in the US, travels are planned, along with frequent written and oral exchanges.
