Description of the thesis topic
An alarming proportion of children grow up in environments that are highly disadvantageous for an appropriate physical, psychological and cognitive development - even in developed countries. A large number of studies also show a significant impact of socio-economic-status (SES) on children's academic achievement, mainly affecting key subjects such as mathematics and reading. The detailed characterization of the factors contributing to these learning difficulties, as well as the identification of targets for remediation are therefore essential, particularly in this vulnerable cohort.
The selected candidate will thus test, for the first time, the cognitive and educational effects of different socio-economic backgrounds and assess the impact of different interventions.
The first mission of the candidate will be the recruitment and cognitive evaluation of school-age children competences in reading and maths, to characterise the key steps in learning in these two domains.
The second mission will be to conceive and develop specific training programs facilitating learning of maths and reading.
The third mission will be to test the benefits of these training programs on a large population of children, with a particular emphasis on children from low socio-economic status.
The interdisciplinarity of the project, at the interface between psychology, cognitive science and applied education, requires the candidate to have a degree in cognitive neuropsychology, as well as deep experience with experimental tasks programming for children (e.g. Gorilla platform) and children testing (kindergarten and primary school). Knowledge of statistics (particularly in R) is a plus.
This project will take place at the Laboratoire de Psychologie du Développement et de l'Education de l'enfant (LaPsyDÉ), at the Sorbonne, Paris. The laboratory stands at the interface between child psychology and pedagogy, working in collaboration with a large network of schools, from kindergarten to University. This laboratory explores the mechanisms of development and learning. It hosts researchers in developmental psychology, in cognitive neuroscience, as well as specialists of education.
