Thesis Subject
Problem Definition:
In order to account for the chemistry occurring in the rocket plume before it gets diluted into the large-scale climate model grid-cell, parameterizations need to be developed and used in global models. Such a plume parameterization will be developed in LMDZ-INCA for further use by the other global models.
Research Objectives
Development of a new global model version including the emission of pollutants from rocket launches and impact on gas phase ozone chemistry
Consider the chemistry in the plume exhaust before dilution in the global model
Include the aluminium cycle in the model and the perturbations associated with rocket launches and space debris
Consider different emission inventories to account for various types of fleet, emissions, fuel types and geographical distributions
Expected Results
Ability to simulate the impact of rocket launches and space debris on atmospheric composition in LMDZ-INCA model
Quantification of the impact of various fleet scenarios of rocket launches on atmospheric composition and climate
Improved representation of plume processes and aluminium chemistry in the global atmospheric model
Your Work Environment
This thesis will be conducted as part of the Marie Curie SLICE network. SLICE studies the environmental and climate impacts of space launch systems by advancing research on emissions, atmospheric interactions, and sustainable design. This project provides essential information to support European policies and trains a new generation of researchers to shape a more sustainable future for space transportation.
