Job Description

Thesis Subject

The project focuses on resilient control and estimation methods for electrified vehicles, with particular emphasis on safety, comfort, fault tolerance, and battery aging.
Electrified vehicles are a key technology for decarbonized mobility. However, their safe and sustainable deployment in dense urban traffic remains challenging due to uncertain vehicle–battery dynamics, sensor or actuator faults, critical driving conditions, stop-and-go operation, and progressive battery degradation.
The objective of the PhD project is to develop estimation, fault detection/isolation, and fault-tolerant control methods for coupled vehicle–battery systems. The developed methods should preserve vehicle safety, comfort, and performance while explicitly considering battery state and battery aging information.

Your Work Environment

The recruited PhD candidate will work within the international RECHARGE project, funded by the 2025 USP–CNRS Joint PhD Program.
The PhD will be carried out within an international cotutelle framework between Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France and Universidade de São Paulo. The PhD candidate will be mainly based at LAMIH-CNRS/UPHF in Valenciennes, France, with planned long-term mobility periods at Poli-USP in São Paulo, Brazil.
The PhD candidate will join LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201, a research laboratory with strong expertise in automatic control, intelligent transportation systems, autonomous and electrified vehicles, robust control, and experimental validation. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the partner team at Poli-USP, whose expertise covers robust control, digital control, estimation, fault-tolerant control, and automotive applications.
Regular meetings, joint French-Brazilian supervision, and long-term mobility periods between France and Brazil are planned during the PhD.

Constraints and risks

No specific risk has been identified beyond standard laboratory constraints.
Some activities may involve experimental work on vehicle platforms, battery test benches, or simulators. The PhD candidate will have to comply with safety procedures, platform-use rules, and the associated mandatory training.
The post for which you are applying is in a sector covered by the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST) scheme and therefore, in accordance with the regulations, your appointment must be authorised by the relevant authority at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR)
