Description of the thesis topic
The student will develop new strategies for the functionalization of lignin, the main constituent of biomass and the world's largest renewable resource of aromatic compounds. To accomplish this mission, the applicant will use catalytic reactions that respect the main principles of green chemistry. The main approach will involve a direct catalytic grafting of the material. The final objective is to obtain new biosourced materials to replace fossil raw materials. The polymeric derivatives will be ultimately used for the production of filaments that incorporate inorganic materials for 3D or 4D printing. The synthetic and 3D printing parts will be tackled by the recruited PhD student that will take advantage of the joint expertise of UCCS laboratory and ICAM (Lille and Nantes).
Work Context
The PhD position involves the Institut Catholique d'Arts et Métiers (ICAM Lille) and the Unité de Catalyse et de Chimie du Solide (UCCS – University of Lille). The student will join the teams of Pr. Mathieu Sauthier (CASECO team: http://uccs.univ-lille1.fr/index.php/fr/catalyse-chimie-moleculaire/caseco) and Dr. Clément Dumont (ICAM Lille). The recruited student will develop a project related to lignin valorization.
