Description du sujet de thèse
• Profile required:
- Experience of South America and preferably of one of the three countries involved in the project (Brazil, Chile, Colombia)
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese (depending on the country involved)
- Working knowledge of English (reading books, oral presentations, drafting documents, etc.)
- Ability to follow a teaching and training programme in French for the first year
- Knowledge of the history of the chosen South American country
- Appreciated knowledge of the history of slavery in South America
- Master's degree or training: dance anthropology, political anthropology (with personal movement practice - dance, Feldenkrais, etc.), health anthropology (somatic practices). Training in social psychology and Dance Movement Psychotherapy appreciated
- Training or artistic experience in performing arts, performance, theatre, dance, etc. related to political issues would be welcome.
- 1st inscription in 2025-2026 for a doctorate in anthropology
• Scientific expectations for the contract:
- To write a monograph on the themes addressed by the MOVING project, in particular: contemporary embodied memories of African slavery and artistic practices (including 'Afro' dances), and/or daily life and somatic registers, in the chosen country.
- At the end of the 1st year: a 50-page report will be produced on the construction of the research subject by the doctoral student, which he/she will present at their first meeting with the Thesis Monitoring Committee (TMC), before being able to go out into the field.
- Second year of thesis: Fieldwork year in one of the three Latin American countries. Departure for the research field is possible from the summer of Year 1 (after the annual Summer School). Minimum duration of fieldwork in the country: 12 months.
The doctoral contract is for a period of three years. It may be subject to extension.

• This recruitment is part of the ERC-2023-Advanced Grant research agreement entitled 'Moving Bodies and Memories of African Slavery in South America', “MOVING” 101142048, funded by the European Research Council and obtained under the ERC Advanced Grant scheme. - Véronique Beneï (Principal Investigator of the MOVING project) will supervise the thesis (with the possibility of co-supervision). PhD in Anthropology enrolled in the doctoral course in anthropology, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris
- You will work in close collaboration with Véronique Beneï and the fifteen or so members of the project team, based in Europe, South America and the USA
- Multilingual working environment: French, English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazilian)
- Participation in the Summer Schools is compulsory. Other experimental and exploratory workshops may also be offered to doctoral students during their involvement in the project.
- Based on their experience and practice in the field, each doctoral student will take part in collaborations with local artists in the second phase of the project; they will also assist in the construction of 'citizen science labs' in the third phase of the project.
- Assignment to the LAP, Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Politique, located within the EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales) at 54 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris.
- Office specifically dedicated to the ERC team, equipped with a computer, with access to the common facilities and services of the EHESS. Accessible to people with disabilities
- Travel abroad.

Contraintes et risques
• Schedule and commitment of the PhD:
- 1st year: presence in Paris, training and preparation for fieldwork
- Fieldwork 12 months minimum - end of first year
- Participation in the Summer School aprox. end of June-mid-July each year and in the two international conferences planned during the project.
This schedule is restrictive. Attendance in France is compulsory in order to take part in project activities.
