Description of the thesis topic
During the 2010s, new protest movements emerged in Africa, described as "citizen movements" by their own members: "Y en a marre" in Senegal and "Le balais citoyen" in Burkina Faso have been the most emblematic ones in West Africa. The thesis should focus on a movement of this type in a Central African country (Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Chad). In addition to political science questions on “new social movements” and their transnationalisation, a historical and ethnographic perspective will be required. One of the challenges of the thesis, not exclusive of any other approach, will be to question how the "new citizens' movements", or those claimed as such, are anchored in local arenas and militant history.
