Job Description

Thesis Subject

Quantifying the long-term evolution of cultural production and psychological values in Japan between 700 and 1900 CE, in order to reconstruct the country's modernization trajectory through a computational analysis of historical cultural artifacts (literary texts, artistic productions, biographical sources).

Your Work Environment

The project is part of a joint doctoral collaboration between the CNRS and the University of Tokyo, and extends to the Japanese case the methodological approaches developed by the team on China and Europe. The PhD candidate will contribute to the development of innovative methods in computational social science, to the publication of results in leading international journals, and to the dissemination of scientific work at international conferences.

Constraints and risks

Master's degree (M2 or equivalent) in one of the following fields: cognitive science, computational social science, digital humanities, economic history, economics, sociology, linguistics, computer science, applied statistics, or related disciplines.
Interdisciplinary profiles are encouraged; no prior background in Japanese studies is required.
Proficiency in programming for data science (Python and/or R), including the processing of textual corpora.
Strong familiarity with statistical modeling (regression, generalized linear or additive models).
Experience in natural language processing (NLP) and/or LLM-based annotation is a significant asset.
Prior knowledge of cultural evolution theory, historical psychology, or computational humanities is an asset.
Knowledge of Japanese (spoken or read, modern or classical) is a plus but is not required; the necessary linguistic and historiographical skills can be acquired during the thesis, with the support of the Tokyo team.
Excellent command of English, both spoken and written (working language of both teams and of scientific publications).
