Job Description
Thesis Subject
Genome copy number increase (i.e. polyploidy) is frequent in a wide range of tissues, in both physiological and pathological contexts. During development, Drosophila salivary glands undergo programmed endoreplication and reach a ploidy level as high as 1300C. Ploidy increase is often hypothesized to increase the cell's biosynthetic capacity, but experiments instead showed that the mass-normalized protein synthesis rate of large (64N) polyploid cells is the same as that of diploid (2N) cells. Whole-genome duplication is also the second most common alteration leading to tumorigenesis, but its energetic consequences remain poorly understood. We hypothesize that ploidy-driven cellular enlargement may alter cells' energy allocation. This PhD project will focus on studying energy allocation and ATP production rate in different polyploid systems.
