Job Description

Thesis Subject

Cloud thermofluidics: nucleation and active mixing. The thesis focuses on the implementation of analog experiments to study the physical processes involved in cloud development. This development is a complex system governed notably by water phase changes, cooling, and the supply of nucleation nuclei. To analyze these dynamics, the first phase of the thesis will rely on reactive plume experiments designed to isolate and study the interactions between turbulent mixing and buoyancy. The second half of the work will be dedicated to experiments on the heterogeneous nucleation of water droplets via adiabatic expansion in a closed chamber, in order to better understand the influence of the nature of the nuclei (pollen, salt crystals, soot) on cloud formation.

Your Work Environment

LPENS is located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, at the École Normale Supérieure. The laboratory is equipped for physics experimentation. The 'Mechanics, Soft Matter, Morphogenesis' team at LPENS focuses on problems in fluid and solid mechanics at the interface of other disciplinary subfields: non-linear physics, instabilities, out-of-equilibrium statistical physics, multi-scale systems physics, geomorphology, planetology, etc. Resolving these problems involves a transversal combination of laboratory experiments and theory or numerical simulations. For the coming years, the main research axes focus on the adhesion dynamics of cross-linked polymeric gels, the wetting dynamics of heterogeneous substrates, the mechanics of metamaterials, as well as cohesive granular media and their application to planetary growth. Although the team's activity belongs to the realm of fundamental physics, collaborations with industry, geophysicists, or the medical field give it an applied nuance.
