Job Description

Thesis Subject

The T2K experiment in Japan is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment designed to study neutrino oscillations. Its successor, Hyper-Kamiokande (HK), is expected to start taking data in 2028 and will significantly enhance sensitivity to the CP violation.
T2K and HK shares the same beamline and the same Near Detector, ND280. ND280 is critical to constraint flux and cross-section uncertainties thus reducing systematics in neutrino oscillation analyses.
ND280 has recently undergone a major upgrade, incorporating three new detectors, a high granularity Super Fine-Grained Detector (SuperFGD), two High-Angle Time Projection Chambers (HA-TPCs), and Time-of-Flight (ToF) system. One of the topics of this PhD thesis will be the analysis of the data from these new detectors and their integration in the T2K and Hyper-K oscillation analyses.
In parallel, the group has started an R&D program for a further upgrade of ND280, ND280++, to meet the demands of the high-precision phase of HK. This effort focuses on the development of a high-granularity Water-Based Liquid Scintillator detector. The PhD candidate will actively participate in prototyping and data analysis activities at LPNHE and in Japan, and simulation studies for the design of the full scale ND280++ detector.

Your Work Environment

LPNHE is a major research laboratory with a strong experimental focus in particle physics and astroparticle physics. It is jointly supported by three institutions: CNRS, Sorbonne University, and Université Paris Cité. The laboratory comprises 150 members organized into 12 research teams and 5 research support services.
You will join the Neutrino team, which is currently working on the T2K experiment, its successor Hyper-Kamiokande, as well as the hadron production experiment NA61/SHINE.
The workplace is located on the Jussieu campus in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.
