Job Description
Thesis Subject
Physico-Chemical and Radiative Properties of Mineral Dust from Emerging Sources in Southern Africa
Your Work Environment
Mineral dust generated by the wind erosion of bare dry soils is a key component of the Earth system, influencing climate through its interactions with radiation, clouds, and ecosystems. Due to land-use and climate changes, new dust sources are emerging, yet their intensity and properties remain poorly characterized.
This PhD project aims to assess the climate-relevant properties of these emerging dust sources in the regional context of Southern Africa, a region strongly affected by environmental change. The research will rely on laboratory experiments using a collection of soil samples available at LISA/CNRS. These soils will be used to generate dust aerosols, enabling direct comparisons between source materials and emitted particles.
Comprehensive chemical and mineralogical analyses will be conducted to identify the compounds responsible for light absorption, hygroscopicity, and source signatures. The study will also investigate changes in dust composition during emission and transport processes and will compare the results with satellite observations and existing model parameterizations.
This project will contribute to improving our understanding of the impact of mineral dust on the regional climate of Southern Africa.
Constraints and risks
The proposed work is part of a research project investigating the emerging role of anthropogenic dust in the Southern African climate system. This interdisciplinary collaborative project between CNRS and the Global Change Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand aims to strengthen international partnerships and promote knowledge exchange.
Research visits to the Global Change Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) are expected during the PhD.
