Job Description
Thesis Subject
This thesis is funded by the ANR CIGALE2D project, which aims to develop and utilize an extension of the CIGALE software for spatially resolved observations of distant galaxies. The CIGALE software is a global standard for determining the physical parameters of galaxies (stellar mass, star formation rate, dust extinction, etc.) based on the galaxy integrated photometry. Recently, a spectroscopic module has also been developed. The goal of the CIGALE2D project is to extend this tool to the resolved analyses made possible by the JWST and ALMA telescopes. The Strasbourg Observatory is responsible for the spectroscopic component of CIGALE2D. In a first phase, the successful candidate will test the combination of the CIGALE spectroscopic module with the 2D modules. They will then apply this new tool to the ALPINE CRISTAL sample to study the assembly of massive galaxies at z~5 using a very rich dataset combining high-resolution JWST and ALMA data in both photometry and spectroscopy. In a second phase, the candidate will develop an approach combining resolved photometry and slit spectroscopy. This approach will then be directly applied to the JWST CAPERS spectroscopic surveys to study the rejuvenation of disks at z~2.
Your Work Environment
The successful candidate will be based at the Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory, within the Galaxies, High Energies, and Cosmology team (OBAS/GALHECOS), and will work under the supervision of Matthieu Béthermin. They will be affiliated with Doctoral School 182 (Physics and Physical Chemistry). The Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory is a joint research unit (UMR) of the CNRS and the University of Strasbourg, located in the heart of the city's historic campus. It comprises approximately 100 staff members, including about 30 permanent scientists whose primary research areas are galactic physics, high-energy astrophysics, and data science for astronomy. The successful candidate will also work closely with the CIGALE2D project team at CEA Saclay, the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, and the Côte d'Azur Observatory. Finally, there will be regular exchanges with members of major international collaborations, including ALPINE CRISTAL and CAPERS, as well as travel to conferences in France and abroad. The successful candidate will be eligible for French social benefits (health insurance, paid leave), partial reimbursement of transportation costs, and access to a subsidized canteen.
