Job Description
Thesis Subject
The PhD project aims to develop and implement a time-resolved tip-enhanced photoluminescence setup on a low-temperature (5 K), ultra-high-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. The objective is to investigate the characteristic lifetimes of excited states in individual molecules and interacting molecular systems. This approach will enable the study of their optical properties with ultimate spatial (sub-nanometer) and temporal (sub-picosecond) resolution.
Your Work Environment
The PhD candidate will join the STM group at the IPCMS (Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg), which investigates the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of atomic-scale structures. The research will be carried out under the supervision of Guillaume Schull within the framework of the ERC AETHER project, dedicated to the study of photo-induced phenomena in organic nanostructures at the ultimate spatial scale.
The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Physics and Physical Chemistry of the University of Strasbourg (ED182).
A university restaurant is located just 30 meters from the laboratory. The institute is situated on the Cronenbourg campus and can be reached in approximately 10 minutes by bus from Strasbourg central railway station.
This position falls within a sector subject to the Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST). Consequently, in accordance with French regulations, appointment to the position is subject to authorization by the competent authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
Constraints and risks
Apart from conference travel, no regular business trips are expected. The position does not involve on-call duties; however, some experiments may occasionally need to be conducted outside normal working hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
The main identified risks are associated with the use of cryogenic liquids and optical radiation sources. Appropriate safety training will be provided to the successful candidate before working with these systems.
