Description of the thesis topic
The objective of the thesis is to deliver materials for more efficient ICCU processes (CO2 capture and utilization). This will be accomplished by developing a targeted number of novel nanocomposite DFM catalysts (bifunctional solid is used (so-called dual functional material). The strategy for achieving the project goals includes the synthesis of novel materials and the employment of in situ advanced physicochemical characterization and analysis techniques to understand the underlying phenomena which define the performance and stability of the DFM. The interaction between advanced characterization and catalytic testing experiments will stimulate a learning process and will rationally guide all activities aimed at developing a prototype DFM catalyst.
Three main objectives are identified:
- Synthesis of metal-doped CeO2 NPs and catalytic tests in mixed CO2/H2 stream
- Synthesis of fluorohectorite clay mineral and characterization as adsorbent for CO2 capture
-Preparation, evaluation and in situ characterization of DFM
The PhD student recruited on the project will have access to all the characterization techniques available on the platform at the IS2M and to specific technical tools dedicated to the project (high temperature oven for the synthesis of fluorohectorite clay and TG-DSC for CO2 adsoprtion) to successfully conduct his/her research.
Finally, this project, that is carried out in collaboration with the ICPEES laboratory in Strasbourg and IRCELYON in Villeurbanne will enable the non-permanent researcher to develop complementary and formative scientific and technological skills for a future occupational integration.
The workplace is the Institute of Materials Science of Mulhouse (IS2M), it counts 160 personnel staff and 11 technical platforms certified ISO 9001.
The PhD student will integrate the Transfer, Reactivity, Materials for Clean Processes (TRM2P) team. The TRM2P team is working on energy storage (hydrogen vector and recovery of fatal heat), material and energy recovery of bio-sourced products (development of chars for agronomic, environmental and energy applications), on the development of innovative processes for the synthesis of clay-type lamellar compounds (modulation of synthesis conditions according to the intended application), on the formulation of composite materials for separation, controlled release of active molecules and adsorption of pollutants in the gas and liquid phase, and on the development and use of specific characterization methods (calorimetry,..) and modelling of process-adapted mass and heat transfers (knowledge model,..).
The PhD student will benefit from a dynamic environment and, in agreement with his/her hierarchical manager, internal technical training at the IS2M, training courses offered by the CNRS and University of Haute Alsace and participation in international congresses to present the results of his/her research. The PhD student will partly work in Strasbourg at ICPEES for characterization of the catalytic materials.
Constraints and risks
Regular travelling from Mulhouse to Strasbourg is expected.
