Job Description

Thesis Subject

The AI-4D-GYROSCAFF project aims to overcome the fundamental limitations of current static implants by developing adaptive 4D metamaterials with gyroid geometry, capable of spatio-temporally orchestrating cellular mechanotransduction to guide tissue regeneration whilst actively preventing infections. Led at IS2M (CNRS UMR7361) by Laurent Pieuchot (cellular mechanobiology), with co-supervision by Arnaud Spangenberg (multiphoton photopolymerisation) and Jean Daou (chemistry of porous nanomaterials), this project is based on three interdependent innovations: the inverse design, using machine learning, of triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) with gyroid geometry, the formulation of a shape-memory polycaprolactone (PCL) nanocomposite resin loaded with functionalised mesoporous materials and antimicrobial nanozeolites, and submicron fabrication via two-photon stereolithography on the DIADEM platform. The thermally controlled deployment of the structure in vivo exposes stem cells to surfaces with variable curvature, activating the mechanosensitive YAP/TAZ pathway to stimulate osteogenesis through purely biophysical induction. This project will demonstrate the proof of concept for adaptive closed-loop implants capable of responding autonomously to the stresses of the physiological microenvironment, paving the way for a new generation of smart biomaterials for reconstructive surgery.

Your Work Environment

The PhD research will take place at IS2M (Mulhouse Institute of Materials Science) and will be supervised by Laurent Pieuchot (CNRS Director, IS2M) in collaboration with André Castro (André P. G. Castro, MEng, PhD, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon). IS2M is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 7361) jointly supervised by the CNRS and the University of Haute-Alsace, located on the Illberg campus in Mulhouse. This multidisciplinary centre brings together more than 200 staff members, including researchers, engineers and around sixty PhD students. The institute focuses its research activities on three main areas of excellence: functional materials, surfaces and interfaces, and porous materials, drawing on state-of-the-art technical platforms certified to ISO 9001. As part of this joint supervision arrangement, the PhD student will also work closely with the Instituto Superior Técnico, the prestigious school of engineering, science and technology at the Universidade de Lisboa, in Portugal. Located in Lisbon, this historic, internationally renowned institution is home to over 11,000 students and around a thousand researchers spread across numerous centres of research excellence. By combining IS2M's expertise in materials science with Técnico's high-tech environment and engineering specialisms, this project offers a rich scientific ecosystem, unique interdisciplinary synergy and privileged access to complementary, world-class facilities.
The PhD student (M/F) will be affiliated with the Mulhouse branch of the Strasbourg Doctoral School (ED 182).
The campus is located in a green setting and is easily accessible by public transportation.
Employee benefits: partial reimbursement of transit fares and/or a transportation allowance, university cafeteria, continuing education, and supplemental health insurance.
