Description du sujet de thèse
Liquid flows in vascular networks are among the most effective ways to transport matter and information for life. Artificial vascular networks have mimicked this strategy, without reproducing the same level of autonomy and adaptability. In the most adaptable organisms, the vascular network contracts upon local stimuli to orient fluid transport where it is needed. This enables autonomous functionalities without the need for a complex nervous system. These organisms use fluid transfer to locomote towards objectives, remodel their environment or exchange information with their pairs. Self-contracting networks are a good candidate to create artificial soft materials with similar living matter functionalities. Such material would sense stimuli and perform actions like robots, but also retain its functionalities under shape change, division, or reassembly like condensed matter.

To reach this goal, we need to know what is the mechanics of self-contractions and how to relate them to global fluid transport and living matter functionalities. Candidates with either Physics or Engineering backgrounds and interested in the general area of soft/compliant mechanics, active matter or fluid mechanics are welcome to apply. The candidate should have an interest in experimental studies and in theoretical modelling or numerical simulations.
Contexte de travail
The IRPHE Laboratory specializes in fluid mechanics. It regularly recruits researchers from the CNRS, Aix-Marseille University, and Centrale Marseille. The position is located in a relevant sector for the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore, in accordance with regulations, requires that your arrival be authorized by the competent MESR authority.
