Job Description
Thesis Subject
HIGH-TEMPERATURE AND HIGH-PRESSURE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF FAULTS: APPLICATION TO ELECTROMAGNETIC EXPLORATION OF HIDDEN GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS
Abstract
Geothermal energy remains largely under-exploited in France, particularly in areas with thin crusts, such as the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, which nevertheless have the most abundant surface geothermal manifestations. Indeed, the resource is generally hidden, which hinders its exploitation. Helicopter-borne electromagnetism has proven to be of interest for geothermal energy, as demonstrated by several studies. This tool can be used to image large areas to depths of several hundred metres. However, the method is under-exploited, as interpreting the results remains difficult and even represents a scientific obstacle when it comes to linking the signal obtained to the petrophysical properties, in this case electrical, of the rocks being investigated. To address this challenge, we propose, on the one hand, to characterise the petrophysical behaviour of rocks in the laboratory, at temperatures and pressures representative of the natural target systems, and, on the other hand, in order to tackle the issue of scale change, which is still poorly understood today, we aim to establish a methodology for scale transfer. This is based on conducting electromagnetic measurements on the ground, at an intermediate scale, at reference points. This work will focus mainly on the hidden geothermal systems of Mont-Dore and Pontgibaud.
Your Work Environment
This thesis will be carried out at two sites. On the one hand, at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans (ISTO, https://www.isto-orleans.fr/) for the experimental part and high-temperature and high-pressure petrophysical measurements, and on the other hand at the BRGM for the acquisition and processing of geophysical and petrophysical field data. The ISTO is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) under the joint supervision of the CNRS (Regional Delegation Centre Limousin Poitou Charentes), the University of Orléans and the Bureau de Recherche Géologiques et Minières (BRGM). The BRGM is a public industrial and commercial establishment under the supervision of the Ministries of Higher Education and Research; Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forestry, Sea and Fisheries; and Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty. The thesis will be attached to the ED 552 Doctoral School - Energy - Materials - Earth and Universe Sciences (EMSTU) at the University of Orléans.
