Job Description

Thesis Subject

Objectives: understanding how the microstructure of industrial refractory materials controls their macroscopic thermophysical and thermomechanical properties, and how these properties in turn govern their behavior under severe thermal gradients representative of service conditions. The project is therefore built around a multi-scale logic: the assembly of phases, inclusions, porosity, and diffuse microcracking must first be linked to measurable macroscopic properties, and these macroscopic descriptors must then be linked to the thermomechanical response observed under controlled thermal load on the ATHORNA thermal shock platform (https://www.reffracteur.eu/phd-positions/ see PhD 09).
Results: establishment of relationships between microstructure and macroscopic thermomechanical properties of industrial refractory materials, collection of an experimental database combining conventional characterization tools with in situ ATHORNA monitoring, identification/prioritization of the thermomechanical performance of the different types of refractory materials supplied by the company CERAQUITAINE.
Skills/profile sought: Master 2 or equivalent (Bac+5) in materials science and/or materials engineering. Candidates should have excellent skills in experimental characterization techniques and materials science, preferably in the field of refractories and/or ceramics. A specific skill in thermo-mechanics would be appreciated. Oral and written communication skills (in the English language) are mandatory.

Your Work Environment

Located in Limoges, the IRCER research laboratory is a mixed unit (UMR 7315) under the dual supervision of the CNRS and the University of Limoges. It is attached to the Institute of Chemistry (INC) and all the work carried out aims at understanding and mastering the production processes applied to ceramics and surface treatments in order to produce objects with the desired properties. The company CERAQUITAINE (https://www.ceraquitaine.com/) is a manufacturer of niche refractory parts.
As this thesis is part of the European doctoral network REFFACTEUR, the 36-month period will be divided as follows:
- Months 1 to 9 (9 months): the PhD student will first work mainly in Saint-Aulaye at the CERAQUITAINE company site;
- Months 10 to 27 (18 months): the PhD student will then work in Limoges at the IRCER laboratory (Institut de Recherche sur les Céramiques, UMR CNRS 7315);
- Months 28 to 36 (9 months): the PhD student will finally work again in Saint-Aulaye on the site of the company CERAQUITAINE.

Constraints and risks

The position is located in a sector relevant to the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with regulations, that your arrival be authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.
