Description of the thesis topic

Microstructure design of refractory castables for in use thermomechanical properties optimization
Key words: Minerals, Microstructure, Refractory materials, Thermo-mechanics
Objectives: investigation of various model refractory castables related to direct iron reduction by hydrogen. Targeting high purity silica-free materials (essentially alumina-based) with high resistance to hydrogen-based atmosphere. Optimization of thermal shock resistance.
Expected results: better understanding of complex microstructure evolution of refractory castables vs temperature, characterization of macroscopic thermomechanical properties, collection of feebacks to draw general lines for a better design of castable microstructure that can sustain future service conditions using hydrogen.
Skills/Candidate profile: Master's level related to Materials Science and/or Materials Engineering. Candidates should have excellent skills for experimental characterization technics and in materials science, preferably in the domain of refractories and/or ceramics. A specific skill in thermomechanics would be appreciated. Oral and written communication skills (english) are mandatory.

Work Context

Located in Limoges, the IRCER research laboratory is a mixed unit (UMR 7315) under the dual supervision of the CNRS and the University of Limoges. It is linked to the Institute of Chemistry (INC) and the main activities aim at understanding and controlling the elaboration processings applied to ceramics and surface treatments for the elaboration of objects with the desired usage properties. Imerys company (https://www.imerys.com/fr) is a global leader in mineral-based specialty solutions for industry globally.
As this PhD position is part of the Cesaref European doctoral network, the timing is divided in this way:
- Month 1 to 9 (9 months): the doctoral student will be first based near Lyon (France) on the site of Imerys Aluminates company ;
- Month 10 to 27 (18 months): the PhD student will be then based in Limoges (France) at IRCER laboratory (Institut de Recherche sur les Céramiques, UMR CNRS 7315, www.ircer.fr);
- Months 28 to 36 (9 months): the PhD student will finally be based a second time near Lyon (France) on the site of Imerys Aluminates company.
