Job Description

Thesis Subject

Objectives
This PhD project aims to investigate the influence of ceramic shell microstructure and cluster architecture on the thermal shock resistance of ceramic shell moulds used in investment casting. Advanced in situ experiments combined with multi-scale Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling will be employed to identify the key stress and damage mechanisms governing shell failure. The results will lead to the development of predictive design rules and digital tools to support high-throughput investment casting strategies. In the longer term, the numerical methodology developed during the project will be integrated into the cluster design process.

Expected Outcomes
Identification of critical thermal gradient thresholds;
Definition of robust design rules for ceramic shell mould clusters;
Experimental validation of the relationships between microstructure and thermal shock resistance; Development of multi-scale finite element models for predicting crack initiation and propagation; Development and validation of a digital twin with an appropriate level of maturity; Proposal and evaluation of new cluster architectures;
Validation of optimized solutions through industrial trials.

Candidate Profile
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Materials Science and/or Computational Methods in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related field). The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong background in numerical methods applied to thermomechanics, together with some prior research or practical experience in this field. Experience with finite element software such as Abaqus will be considered a strong advantage. Candidates should also have a good knowledge of materials science and experimental characterization techniques. Experience with ceramic materials will be appreciated. Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential. Experience with finite element simulation software will also be considered an asset.

Your Work Environment

Located in Limoges (France), the IRCER research laboratory is a joint research unit (UMR CNRS 7315) operated by the CNRS and the University of Limoges. Affiliated with the CNRS Institute of Chemistry (INC), IRCER conducts research on the understanding and control of processing routes for advanced ceramics and surface treatments, with the aim of developing materials and components with tailored properties for demanding applications. SAFRAN is a leading French international high-technology group operating in the aerospace, space, and defence sectors. The company designs, manufactures, and supports cutting-edge systems and equipment for civil and military applications. As this PhD project is part of the REFFRACTEUR European Doctoral Network, the 36-month doctoral programme will be organised as follows:
Months 1–9 (9 months): the doctoral candidate will work at SAFRAN's site in Colombes (France);
Months 10–27 (18 months): the doctoral candidate will work at IRCER (Institute for Research on Ceramics, UMR CNRS 7315) in Limoges (France);
Months 28–36 (9 months): the doctoral candidate will work to SAFRAN's site in Colombes (France).

Constraints and risks

This position is located within a protected research area under the French Scientific and Technical Potential Protection (PPST) framework. In accordance with French regulations, the successful candidate's appointment is subject to prior authorization by the competent authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
