Description of the thesis topic

Title: Discrete Element Method to support microstructure design of refractories
Objectives: To conduct developments of numerical tools based on the discrete element method (DEM) for investigation of the relationships between microstructure and thermomechanical properties of model materials. These developments include debounding, thermomechanical coupling, crack-closure and anisotropic behaviours. These developments will lead to a “virtual numerical lab” able to provide tensile, dilatometry, fracture mechanics or thermal shock virtual tests for virtual characterizations. The related developments will be integrated to the free DEM software GranOO.
Expected Results: Validation of the method in regard to experimental observations in terms of (i) mesoscopic thermomechanical quantities such as CTE, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, stress-strain law and fracture energy and (ii) microscopic observations such as fracture coalescence under thermal and mechanical loadings dynamically observed in SEM. Applicant Profile: Master's level in Materials Science and/or Computational Methods in MechanicalEngineering. Candidates should be excellent in their skills for numerical method applied to mechanics, with some experiences. A good knowledge in material science and their associated experimental characterisation technics is also expected. Oral and written communication skills (English) are also required. Some experiences in Python and/or C++ programming will be appreciated.

Work Context

Located in Limoges, the IRCER research laboratory is a mixed unit (UMR 7315) under the dual supervision of the CNRS and the University of Limoges. It is linked to the Institute of Chemistry (INC) and the main activities aim at understanding and controlling the elaboration processings applied to ceramics and surface treatments for the elaboration of objects with the desired usage properties. Vesuvius (www.vesuvius.com) is a global leader application involving engineering and technology for fusion of metal.
As this PhD position is part of the Cesaref European doctoral network, the timing is divided in this way:
- Months 1 to 9 (9 months): the doctoral student will first be mainly based in Lyon on the Imerys company's site;
- Month 10 to 27 (18 months): the doctoral student will then be based in Limoges, France, at the IRCER laboratory (Institut de Recherche sur les Céramiques);
- Months 28 to 36 (9 months): the doctoral student will finally be again based in Lyon on the Imerys company's site.
Many mobilities are therefore to be foreseen in accordance with the requirements of this type of European project.
The supervising team (Marc Huger, Nicolas Tessier-Doyen, Chris PARR,Christoph WÖHRMEYER) has an expertise in the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory materials for more than 20 years, both from academic and industrial point of view.
Indicative remuneration: between €4,200 and €4,700 gross monthly depending on the doctor's situation at the beginning of the contract.
