Membrane Traffic and Morphogenesis: Quantification of Membrane Flows in Embryonic Tissue Development Tissue morphogenesis results from the complex interaction of mechanical forces, cell adhesion, and signaling. While the mechanisms of actomyosin contractility have been extensively studied, the role of membrane fluxes (endocytosis, recycling, and exocytosis) in tissue remodeling remains largely unknown. This thesis aims to elucidate how membrane trafficking regulates the dynamics of adhesion molecules and signaling receptors during epithelial morphogenesis. The project will use the Drosophila melanogaster embryo, a standard model for studying morphogenesis in vivo. The Ph.D. student will develop innovative approaches to high-speed 4D microscopy, combined with new fluorescent labeling tools and automated particle-tracking methods, to directly measure membrane fluxes during development. These approaches will enable the quantification, at the level of intracellular organelle populations, of the dynamics of intracellular trafficking of adhesion molecules and membrane receptors. This project, at the intersection of developmental biology, cell biology, quantitative imaging, and computational analysis, aims to reveal a dimension of tissue morphogenesis that remains largely unexplored.
Your Work Environment
The IBDM, located on the Luminy Campus, comprises approximately 220 tenured researchers, faculty members, engineers, and technicians, as well as non-tenured staff on fixed-term contracts, postdocs, doctoral students, and interns, distributed across 21 research teams and 11 technical facilities and services. The IBDM is a joint research unit under the supervision of the CNRS and AMU, which explores the field of developmental biology and associated pathologies. The work will be carried out within the “Organization and Dynamics of Biological Forms” team led by Thomas LECUIT. As the laboratory is composed of members of various nationalities, proficiency in English is essential.
