Job Description

Thesis Subject

Coordinated cell deformation in Drosophila pupal wing expansion :
During pupal development, the wings of Drosophila must expand their surface area while constrained within a pupal sac. This tissue is comprised of two cell layers in a sheet-like arrangement with an extracellular matrix. During expansion, these cells increase their surface area while becoming thinner. Such cellular deformations while maintaining a planar geometry involves the careful coordination of active forces that drive this shape change with adhesive elements that accommodate this change by remodeling cell-cell contacts. Using live fluorescence imaging, quantitative image analysis and physical models, we seek to understand this coordinated behavior at the subcellular scale that gives rise to the surface area expansion at the tissue scale.

Your Work Environment

The IBDM, located on the Luminy Campus, comprises approximately 220 permanent researchers, lecturers, engineers and technicians, as well as temporary staff on fixed-term contracts, post-docs, PhD students and interns, spread across 21 research teams and 11 technical platforms and services.
The IBDM is a joint research unit under the supervision of the CNRS and AMU, which explores the field of developmental biology and associated pathologies.
The activity will be carried out within the 'Organisation and Dynamics of Biological Forms' team led by Thomas LECUIT.
As the laboratory is composed of several nationalities, the use of English is essential.
