Job Description
Thesis Subject
This project aims to develop catalytic pathways for the transformation of bio-based derivatives (furfural and HMF) into functionalized aromatic compounds for polymerization applications. First, the Diels–Alder reaction will be investigated after activation of the substrates via acetalization, with a focus on optimizing performance (yield, productivity, and catalyst recyclability) and exploring various Lewis acid catalysts and bio-based dienophiles. Key parameters such as temperature, solvent, and reactant purity will be evaluated. Next, the aromatization of the cycloadducts will be carried out using either acid or base catalysts, with particular attention to selectivity (ortho/meta) and its impact on polymer properties. Finally, the resulting aromatic compounds will be functionalized (reduction, amination, hydrogenation) to produce diols, diamines, or bifunctional compounds suitable for copolymerization steps. Catalytic systems based on noble and then non-noble metals will be investigated.
Your Work Environment
The work will be carried out at CNRS, at the Institut de Chimie des Milieux et Matériaux de Poitiers (IC2MP – UMR CNRS 7285 – https://ic2mp.labo.univ-poitiers.fr/
), within the “Catalysis and Non-Conventional Media” team, under the supervision of the scientific coordinator.
The candidate will be affiliated with the Rosalind Franklin Doctoral School in Poitiers.
