Description of the thesis topic

This PhD contract is part of the New Aquitaine region project "DeNOX-DeCarb" which is supported by the ANR H-to Clean. The objective is to propose efficient and innovative catalytic systems for the reduction of NOx emitted by thermal engines powered by carbon-free energies, based on hydrogen: H2 and NH3.
This study will exploit the promising pathway of H2-assisted ammonia NOx reduction (NH3/H2-SCR) on silver-based materials.
The proposed mechanism remains to be specified and would involve the activation of NOx by H2 to generate an intermediate species (HNOx) that can be reduced to N2 by NH3. Consequently, the proximity of the active sites for this reaction becomes a key parameter to optimize. Moreover, the consumption of H2 in the oxidizing medium must be controlled.
The mission of the PhD student will be based on (i) the synthesis of catalytic materials (CRPP), (ii) their physico-chemical characterization (CRPP-IC2MP) and (iii) the evaluation of their catalytic properties in gas phase in more or less complex mixture (IC2MP), in order to optimize the synergy between the activation of NOX by H2 and the reduction of the key intermediate by NH3.
The objective will finally be to link the physicochemical properties to the catalytic activity.

This project is based on the complementarity of two laboratories to explore the synthesis of hierarchical materials (CRPP-University of Bordeaux) and the catalytic activity (IC2MP-University of Poitiers).

Work Context

At the CNRS, the PhD student will work in Poitiers in the Institute of Chemistry of Media and Materials of Poitiers (IC2MP, UMR 7285 CNRS-University of Poitiers https://ic2mp.labo.univ-poitiers.fr/), in the SAMCAT team. This research team is specialized in the development of catalytic and electrocatalytic materials for applications mainly in the fields of energy and environment. The candidate will be registered in the doctoral school Théodore Monod ED n°614 (University of Poitiers).
This thesis is part of a regional project with the University of Bordeaux.
The subject of the proposed thesis is therefore supervised in collaboration with the CRPP of Bordeaux (Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, https://www.crpp.cnrs.fr/). A mobility between the two sites (Poitiers/Bordeaux) is thus planned.

Constraints and risks

Risks related to the use of chemicals compounds and gases.
